July 28 - Hiwassee River Outing
The Hiwassee River is located near Reliance, Tennessee, and is wide and scenic with mostly shallow, swift water, and several class 2 rapids. The float is 5.5 miles and takes 2 to 4 hours to complete.
Participants may use their own boats or rent them from Hiwassee River Outfitters at the following rates: 4 to 7 Person Rafts = $18.31 per person with a $73.20 minimum charge Inflatable 1 Person Kayak = $30.00 Inflatable 2 Person Kayak = $48.00 1 Person Kayak (Sit-On-Top) = $30.00 Tubes = $20.00 (must be at least 12 years old) Rentals include shuttle, lifejackets, and paddles Although not mandatory, the outfitter recommends reservations on weekends.
The outfitter runs an equipment/people shuttle to the put in each half hour. If you make reservations, you should tell the outfitter that you plan to run the river at 1:00 pm, EST, (12:00 CST/ Alabama Time) in order to float with our group.

It is about a 3 hour drive from the Anniston to the outfitters. Plans are to leave the Pick-N-Save (formerly Winn Dixie) parking lot on US Hwy 431 in Saks at 7:30 am and arrive at the outfitters by 10:30 am (CST) or 11:30 am (EST).
Plans are to have lunch at the outfitters and then run the river at 12:00 pm (CST) or 1:00 pm (EST). The restaurant at the outfitters is closed so participants will need to bring their own lunches. A stop at a local restaurant for dinner is planned for after the float. .
Those desiring to camp overnight can find sites at both the outfitters and the nearby Gee Creek Campground located at the Hiwassee/Ocoee State Park.
