24 Aug 2018 Staff jrw
Mount Mitchell lies in the crest of the Black Mountains at an elevation of 6,684 feet making it the highest point east of the Mississippi. It offers breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, rolling ridges and fertile valleys, The area is comprised mainly of a fir/spruce forest mix and has a cool Canadian like environment at its upper elevations.

Our association has reservations for 3 nights at the Poplar Site at the Briar Bottom Group Camp located adjacent to Black Mountain Campground. The site sits at the base of Mt. Mitchell along the scenic South Toe River and has access to hot showers, bathroom facilities and centrally located water spigots. The $205.00 cost of the site for the 3 nights will be divided among those participating. Hiking opportunities are numerous in both the state park and the surrounding South Toe District of the Pisgah National Forest. There are several trails that begin and end at the campground. Exact hiking plans will be determined by group consensus of those participating.

Group meal plans include traveling to the summit restaurant for breakfast on Saturday morning and having a group spaghetti dinner at the campground on Sunday evening. Participants will be responsible for the remainder of their meals. If you desire more information about this outing or plan to participate, please contact Keith Hudson by Monday, September 3.
